The Custodial Grandparent Can Face Lonely Social Relationships

At the time of life when most seniors are retiring and going on trips and cruises, a custodial grandparent is saddled with the responsibilities of a younger person. Although the grandparent may be happy that their grandchildren are safe with them, there is still a stigma and loss of freedom as a result.

Children are bundles of energy, which is why most seniors have visits or sleepovers that last a couple of days at the most. Although they love their grandchildren dearly, grandparents are happy to get back to their peaceful existence after an extended visit with the grandkids.

It is part of the life cycle that aging seniors simple don't have the energy to keep up with all the demands that growing children require. A custodial grandparent can be put under great stress in caring for grandchildren simply by the physical demands that are placed on their bodies.

There is also the possibility that the grandparents will lose many of their former friends because they are unable to socialize with their responsibilities at home. There is also negative judgment that is rendered unfairly against the grandparents that they somehow "took away" their grandchildren from their children.

Former friends may regard the grandparents as "failures" because they did not raise their own child "properly". As many of you who have custody of grandchildren know, these types of judgments are unfair and hurtful. Despite knowing the views that are held by your friends are ignorant, they are painful just the same. You should be lauded as heros for your courage to step in and save your grandchildren when they needed you most.
