Article Writing Tips - Don't Confuse Your Readers

Did you know that the average reading level in the US is about 8th grade? It's true. We have a bunch of uneducated fools in this country that I have been living in for my entire life. And quite honestly, my wife, who is a school teacher, doesn't see it getting any better anytime soon. Okay, so what does this have to do with article writing? It has everything to do with it. You need to understand your audience. You need to know who you are writing for. This article explains as well as gives some tips on how not to confuse your readers. Heaven knows, many of them are confused enough.

If you're writing an article on medicine that's going to be read by doctors, then by all means, bring out the big guns. You don't want these people to think that YOU'RE an illiterate fool. You're writing for a very educated audience, and therefore your articles should read as such. However, if you're writing an article on adult ADHD then most likely the person reading it has it and probably has a short attention span. Quite possibly, his vocabulary is NOT up to par with a doctor's. So you will write a different kind of article for him.

Okay, so how do we keep from confusing the simpler readers? Well, for starters, write simply. You don't have to impress these people with your vocabulary. Half the big words you use they're probably not going to understand anyway. So what's the point. If you have to use terms, define them, such as defining ADHD and do it in simple English.

Another way to keep from confusing your reader is to keep your paragraphs short. For that matter, keep your articles short. The less they have to read, the better. As long as they get the information that they need, that's all that matters. The rest is just genuflecting. And we have enough of that in the written word.

Okay, so you got it? Keep it simple and keep it short. Otherwise, you're going to lose half of your 8th grade audience.
